Two questions:
ReplyDelete1. In the City's single-minded quest for density, did any City / CDA staffer or elected official ever push the Senior Housing developer to increase density so as to lower the footprint and allow adjacent property owners to keep what they own? Didn't think so.
Why is density treated as the golden calf of urban planning in other situations, but a non-factor here?
2. How close is this facility to walkable destinations? For seniors, it's 'use-it-or-lose-it', so access to walkable streetscapes and nearby activity centers is critical to senior health and survival rates.
If Madison has any claim to being a 'healthy city', inclusion of walkable civic spaces near senior housing--that take into account senior citizen travel patterns and pedestrian needs--would be a key consideration.
Without those ped-friendly, destination-filled streetscapes near senior facilities -- the health of seniors who don't 'use it', who don't exercise -- degenerates rapidly.
